It was a day to remember for the P7 Boys of St. John’s Primary School, KingsIsland, as they were crowned CnmB Tír Eoghain Cuman na mBunscol Tír Eoghan Outdoor Champions at the Tyrone GAA Headquarters in Garvaghy — completing a magnificent double by adding the outdoor title to their earlier Tír Eoghan indoor triumph.
The boys’ journey to glory began with a tough semi-final clash against Dunnamore Primary School. In a physical and hard-fought encounter, St. John’s showed tremendous grit, skill and determination to come out on top on a scoreline of 2-5 to 1-2. The boys stood strong in defence and took their scores well, proving that they were up for the challenge from the very start.
In the final, the KingsIsland Boys faced a familiar and formidable opponent and exceptionally talented team in Cabragh Primary School — a team that had already tasted success this year and previously defeated St. John’s in the Academy Blitz semi-final.
From the throw-in, St. John’s meant business. Danny O'Neill opened the scoring with a fine point, followed by two well-taken scores from Jonathan Blair, giving the boys a 3 points to 1 lead at half-time. With a strong wind blowing against them in the second half, the boys dug deep, showing unbelievable character and teamwork.
Daire Robinson was a rock in goals, pulling off several outstanding saves to keep the Cabragh boys at bay. Seanan Fox-Duffy mopped up every ball that came his way. At the other end, Louis O'Neill kicked two superb points into the wind, and Jonathan Blair sealed the victory with a brilliant left-footed effort, leaving the final score at 0-6 to 0-1 in favour of the Kingsisland lads. In truth it took every member of the squad to take the title back to Kingsisland.
The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among the players. The boys had done it — Tyrone Outdoor Champions and Indoor Champions in the same year! A truly remarkable achievement for a talented group who have shown heart, commitment and skill throughout their primary school journey.
When the team returned to school, they were greeted with a guard of honour and rapturous applause from the entire school community — a fitting tribute to a group of boys who have given their all and will go down in school history as "Legends" in the history books of St. John’s Primary School, Kingsisland.
Well done, boys. Every single member of the squad was presented with their county medal from Joe Canavan, Cuman na mBunscol — we are all so proud of you!
